What keeps you reading?

As we are considering how to create an essay (whether research based or personal), I want you to tell me what keeps you interested when you are reading something.

When you are reading (for some of you that is ... if you are reading), what is it that makes you finish the article, book, or website? What strategies does that particular author use that draws you in and keeps you there? Give an example of a work or an author that kept you interested.

I really like stories that are fantastic. Like Harry Potter and things of that nature. I just think that they have a great plot. I also like John Grisham books just because they have cliff hangers. I am not a big fan of books that have inner meaning. When I am reading for enjoyment i don't like to look for inner thoughts. I just like to read stories.

If the story keeps me in suspense to what is happening next, then I will continue reading it. A story has to keep me on the edge of my seat. If it is not a suspense story, it has to be a topic i am really interested in. I really dont enjoy reading though, so a book has to be really good for me to finish it.

It just has to be something that I am somewhat familiar with. That usually gives me the impression that I am furthering my knowledge lof a topic. Or it could just be some subject that is really out there that captures my attention. But to be honest, not very often do I finish books and articles.

The most appropriate time or shall I say the most convenient time to read is during spring break or a vacation to the islands. I find it to be very therapeutic to leisure on the beach with an easy read. If I were in the mood for something a bit more stimulating to the brain it would be News Week, because most of the issues discussed are current events. I love heated debates and politics are a focus in such a magazine as Newsweek.

When I get on the internet and the news headlines come up, it's only a sentence or phrase to capture your interest. The writer will always say something interesting about the topic, but will never put enough information on the main page to satisfy you. It is always "click here to continue reading." The author is good if he gets you to click to the rest of the article.
