"Found" Character Description

Last night you read several chapters out of the book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Your goal for the 10 Spot is to create a "found" character description. Use the designated chapters and find at least three quotes (direct words from the book) that uniquely define one of the characters in the book. Write a brief explanation after the quotes telling why you chose them. I would prefer that you not choose literal descriptions that someone makes of a character. (ex. She was smart and had brown hair.) Here is an example of how it should be formatted:
ex. Christopher
"So I tore the piece of paper up and threw it away." (ch.3 pg. 3)
".........."
" ........."
I chose these lines from the book because they show...

1st period- Chap. 2-5

3rd period- Chap.7-11

5th period- Chap. 13-19

7th period- Chap. 23-29

When you finish, visit the Wikispace and search through the new Tech Tools.

Christopher
"I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7057." (ch. 3 p.2)
"I can walk up and down the street and pretend that I am the only person in the whole world." (ch. 3 p.2)
"I do not like people shouting at me." (ch. 5 p. 4)
I choose these quotes because they describe some unique traits of Christopher.

"I do not like people shouting at me. It makes me scared that they are going to hit me or touch me and I do not know what is going to happen." (Ch.5 pg.4)
"I put my hands over my ears and closed my eyes and rolled forward till I was hunched up with my forehead pressed onto the grass." (Ch.5 pg.4)
"I pulled the fork out of the dog and lifted him into my arms and hugged him." (Ch.5 pg.3)

I chose these quotes because they show the personality of Christopher. The first two quotes show that he does not like confrontation and that he gets scared easily. The third quote shows that he is just a kind and loving little kid.

"I do not like people shouting at me."
"I put my hands over my ears and closed my eyes and rolled forward till I hunched up with my forehead pressed onto the grass."

I chose these lines from the book becasuse they show that Christopher is intelligent, scared, and "weird". He is an intelligent boy when it comes to certain things like prime numbers, but cannot handle people shouting or touching him. His reaction to confrontation is to go into the fetal postition, rather than talking to the person, such as Mrs. Shears.

Mrs. Shears
"What in ***'s name have you done to my dog?"
"She bent down. i thought she was going to pick the dog up herself, but she didn't. Perhaps she noticed how muhc blood there was and didn't want to get dirty."
"Let go of the dog.."

I chose these three quotes because i felt that they descriped Mrs. Shears just as i had visioned her while reading. Mrs. Shears is Christopher's across the street neighbor and is very rude to him. I would assume that she knows about his autism but am not for certain. Either way, their is no excuse for her to treat Christopher like that. By the way she talks to Christopher, it is pretty obvious that she isn't around kids very much, and might possibly have a problem with autistic kids. I chose the last quote because it kind of shows that even when Mrs. Shears cares about something, such as her dog, she still won't risk getting messy. I think that tells us somoething about her character and what might prevail later in the story.

Christopher Boone
"I know all of the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,057" (2).
"I put my hands over my ears and closed my eyes and rolled forward till I was hunched up with my forehead presses onto the grass"(4).
"I got Siobhan to draw lots of these faces and then write down next to them exactly what they ment"(3).
These quotes tell a lot about Christopher. The first quote shows how he can retain numbers really well. He is a number genius and thinks of everything in numbers. Secondly, the next quote shows hows he reacts to situations. He does not act normal. Lastly, the last quote shows how he only understands concrete ideas. He has to be told an example for an emotion or somthing he cannot touch or feel.

"I somethimes think of my mind as a machine" (ch.11 pg 7)

"I like prime numbers" (ch.19 pg.11)

"But it was very difficult to decide which of the digrams was most like the face hey were making because peopel's faces move very quickly." (ch.3 pg. 3)

I chose these lines from the book because it shows how Christopher's mind works. He needs things to be very simple. He likes things that have a right and wrong answer. Things that dont have a right or wrong make him feel uneasy.

AllieB1 said...

'She was shouting, "What in ****'s name have you done to my dog?" '(page 4)
I chose this quote because it shows Mrs. Shears anger towards Christopher.

"It belonged to Mrs. Shears, who was our friend." (page 2)
This quote shows how Christopher views his relationship with Mrs. Shears.

"Perhaps she noticed how much blood there was and didn't want to get dirty. Instead she started screaming again." (page 4)
This quote illustrates to the reader another character's opinion of Mrs. Shears. Mrs. Shears was obvioiusly upset about her dog being killed.

"I like dogs. You always know what a dog is thinking. It has four moods. Happy, sad, cross, and concentrating."

These quotes tell who the character is, what he enjoys, and the fact that he likes simple things. He dosen't like the complicated emotions that humans have...so i guess he dosn't like girls.

Found: Wellington
1.)"Decided that the dog was probablyh killed with the fork because I could not see any other wounds in the dog..." (ch. 2 pg. 1)
I chose this quote because it describes that the dog was dead and had a fork in it.
2.)"Wellington was a poodle...a big poodle." (ch.2 pg.1)
I chose this quote because it tells exactly what kind of dog Wellington was.
3.)"I pulled the fork out of the dog and lifted him into my arms and hugged him." (Ch.5 pg. 4)
This quote shows that the dog was dead and had just died. Christopher pulls the fork out of the dog becausee the fork has done all the damage it could do."

Christopher
"And now if I don't know what someone is saying, I ask them what they mean or I walk away." (Ch.3 pg.3)
"Then she showed me this picture and I knew that it meant "happy," like when I'm reading about the Apollo space missions, or when I am still awake at 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. in the morning and I can walk up and down the street and pretend that I am the only person in the whole world." (Ch.3 pg.2)
"I do not like people shouting at me. It makes me scared that they are going to hit me or touch me and I do not know what is going to happen."
I chose these lines from the book because it gives you a little insight into the personality of Christopher and how he thinks.

"I knew it meant sad, which is what I felt when I found the dead dog." (page 2)

"I like dogs. You always know what a dog is thinking. It has four moods. Happy, sad, cross, and concentrating. Also, dogs are faithful and they do not tell lies because they cannot talk." (page 4)

These three quotes illustrate Christopher's unique personality. I chose the first quote because this is the way that Christopher introduces himself. Thus, he must be proud of the fact that he knows all this information. I chose the second quote because it shows his sense of sympathy for the dead dog he found. The last quote really takes you into the mind of Christopher Boone. It shows his sense of innocence and his love for others.

"...I knew that it meant "sad" which is what I felt when I found the dead dog."
"...I was unable to say what these meant."

I chose these quotes because they show that he is very intelligent considering his conditions of health. He is able to recognize emotions just by pictures even though he couldn't understand what "sad" or "happy" meant if it was just said in words.

1."I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,057." p.2

2."I am still awake at 3 a.m. or 4 a.m. in the morning and I can walk up and down the street and pretend that I am the only person in the whole world."p.2

3."I do not like people shouting at me. It makes me scared that they are going to hit me or touch me and I do not know what is going to happen."p.4

I chose these quotes from chapters 2-5 because I believe they show great aspects of Christopher's character. He has a very bright thinking mind and shows that he knows a lot of things that ordinary people do not know. Also, he has trouble sleeping, and enjoys the fact of being alone at the early hours of the morning. Finally, he has weak ears and does not like people screaming at him. He also seems confused at times and has trouble dealing with sticky situations.

"I put my hands over my ears and closed my eyes and rolled forward till I was hunched up with my forehead pressed onto the grass. The grass was wet and cold. It was nice." (ch.5 pg.4)

I chose these quotes because it shows Christophers innocense, as well as his intelligence. It shows that Christopher is autistic by his simple, matter-of-fact way of thinking.

The "found" character i am going to try and describe is Christopher Boone.

Three Quotes
"I decided that the dog was probably killed with the fork because I could not see any other wounds in the dog and I do not think you would stick a garden fork into a dog after it had died for some other reason."(ch.2 pg.1)

I chose these lines from the book because they show that Christopher is probably mentally handicapped of some kind because if someone sees a fork in a dead dog they would know it killed the dog and Chris thinks it probably killed it.

"I know all the countries of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7,057." (ch.3 pg.2)

I chose this quote because it reveals that Chris has a cool talent of memorizing all of those facts.

"I put the dog down on the lawn and moved back 2 meters." (ch.5 p.4)

I chose this quote because it tells me that Chris is a little strange because he picked up a dog that is dead and then he estimated the distance he stepped back in meter when most people would describe it in feet.

"I do not like people shouting at me. It makes me scared that they are going to hit me or touch me and I do not know what is going to happen." pg.4

I chose these three quotes because it shows that the charactor is a simple minded person that does not exactly understand the world but he reverts to what he knows already.

Siobhan
"Siobhan said that I should write something I would want to read myself" (ch. 7 p.4)
"Siobham said that the book should begin with something to grab people's attention" (ch 7 p.5)
"Siobhan asked me to say this to Steve's mother" (ch 7 p.6)
I chose these quotes because they describe how Siobhan is related to Christopher. Siobhan seems to be a smart mentor type of Chistropher that he respects in many ways.

"They were stacking in my head like loaves in the factory where uncle terry works."
"I didn't like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him."
"I also said that I cared about dogs because they were faithful and honest, and some dogs were cleverer and more interesting than some people"

These quotes show Christopher's personality. He can not handle to much information at once, he doesnt like others touching him, and he cares for things that are faithful and honest.

Siobhan:

"Siobhan said that the book should begin with something to grab people's attention" (ch 7 pg.5).

"Siobhan said that I should write something I would want to read myself" (ch 7 pg. 4).

"Siobhan has long blond hair and wears glasses which are made of green plastic" (ch 7 pg.5).

I chose these specific qoutes about Siobhan because all of these qoutes show that Siobhan is a very unigue person. She wears green glasses, so she is stylish. She tells Christopher to have an attention grabber as well as to write something he would want to read so this tells the reader she knows something about Enligh and writing.

"I like dogs." (ch.11 p.6)

I choose these quotes because they describe how old he is, that he likes dogs, and the last one because he sais he never lies, and that he didn't kill the dog.

"I am 15 years and 3 months and 2 days"(6).

I chose these three quotes because I think that they take a good look into the way Christopher's mind works. He clearly has a very unique thought process.

"I like dogs. That's why I was holding the dog." (Ch. 7, Page 7)

"But I do like murder mystery novels. So I am writing a murder mystery novel."(Ch.7 Page 5)

"I didn't like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him." (Ch. 11 Page 8)

I chose these quotes because it shows how simple minded Christopher is and gives the reader a look into how he makes his decisions.

Michaelc3 said...

"And Mr. Jeavons smells of soap and wears brown shoes that have approximately 60 tiny circular holes in each of them." This quote shows that Christopher is very perceptive, and notices small details. p.5 ch. 7

"I find it hard to imagine things which did not happen to me." Shows that Christpher is not very capable of abstract thought. p. 5 ch. 7

"I didn't like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him." Shows that Christopher is anxious and does not respond to strangers very well. p.8 ch. 11.

FrankB3 said...

Character:Christopher Boone "This is a murder mystery novel."(Ch. 7 pg 4) This quote shows how open and blunt this character is. "'Did you kill the dog?'. he asked. I said,'I did not kill the dog.'"(Ch. 11 pg.7) This quote is an example of how innocent the boy is because he is not quick to justify or rationalise the situation. "'I like dogs," I said.'"(ch11 pg7) Another instance of how black and white everything is with this character.

thomasg3 said...

Quote 1: "I also started with the dog because with the dog because it happened to me and I find it hard to imagine things which did not happen to me." (ch. 7 pg. 5)
I choose this quote because it shows something about Christopher Boone's character and personality and how he has a hard time imagining something that hasn't happened to him.
Quote 2: "I also said that I cared about dogs because they were faithful and honest, and some dogs were cleverer and more interesting than some people." (ch.7 pg. 6)
I choose this quote because again it shows the reader something about Christopher Boone's character that he loves dogs, sometimes more than people.
Quote 3: "He was asking too many questions and he was asking them too quickly." (ch. 11 pg. 7)
I choose this quote becuase it shows that Christopher Boone can not handle multiple and frequent questions that are barraged at him and that he becomes overwhelmed very easily.

nickr3 said...

"I read books about math and science." (ch. 7 p.4)
This shows that he is probably more left brained, harder to understand abstract.

"...and I find it hard to imagine things which did not happen to me." (ch. 7 p.5)
This is a symptom of his autism.

"I didn't like him touching me like this." (Ch. 11 p.8)
Probably another symptom of his autism doesnt like to be touched.

"Siobhan said that I should write something I would want to read myself." (ch 7 pg. 4)

"Siobhan read the first page and said that it was different." ( ch 7 pg. 5)

I chose these quotes because it shows that Siobhan is insightful and more than likely intelligent. Siobhan gives advice to the writer therefore probably has a wealth of knowledge. Siobhan also is practical because he uses plastic glasses rather than metal or titanium.

Chrisopher
"I rolled back onto the lawn and pressed my forehead to the ground again and made the noise that Father calls groaning." (ch. 11 p. 7)
"I sometimes think of my mind as a machine, but not always as a bread-slicing machine." (ch. 11 p. 7)
"I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them." (ch. 13 pg. 8)

I chose these quotes because they are a great example of what kind of character Christopher is.

"The policeman took hold of my arm and lifted me onto my feet. I didn't like him touching me like this. And this is when I hit him" (ch.11 p.8)
I chose this quotes because they all describe Christopher in different ways. They are all tiny characteristics that are unique to the character. They show what he is interested in, how old he is, and that he is very protective of himself. He shows himself a lot within these quotes.

"It is like when you are upset and you hold the radio against your ear and you tune it halfway between two stations so that all you get is white noise and then you turn the volume right up so that this is all you can hear anything else." (Ch.11 p 8)

I chose these quotes about Christopher because they help the reader understand what is going on in his head and how and why he deals with things the way he does.

"...I find it hard to imagine things which did not happen to me.

I chose these three quotes describing Christopher. The quotes indicate he likes order and concrete things. He does not like abstract ideas because they are hard for him to make sense of them in pictures.

"I like policemen, too, and i wanted to answer the question properly, but the policeman did not give me enough time to work out the correct answer." (pg 7)
I felt like this quote described chirstopher because it shows how he is truly caring. His mind wants to do right but he just seems to have trouble working things out correctly.

"i wanted to write about something real and i knew people who had died, but i did not know any people who had been killed, except edward's father from school, mr. paulson, and that was a gliding accident, not murder, and i didnt really know him." ( pg 6)

I felt that this quote described him because it lets us know just how boggled his mind and his thoughts are, because he is just all over the place.

"he was asking too many questions and he was asking them to quickly." (pg 8)

This quote just shows how he was getting frustrated because he could know not do what he wanted.

"'And why were you holding the dog?' he asked...'Why were you holding the dog?' he asked again." (Ch. 11 pg. 7)
"The policeman took hold of my arm and lifted me onto my feet." (Ch. 11 pg. 8)
These quotes from the book demonstrate the policeman's inability to understand Christopher's condition. The policeman is very impatient, and, as defined in the later chapters, he has a bad temper. Though he appears calm at first, he begins to lose his patience and is not calm with Christopher.

"It is like three different people trying to talk to you at the same time about different things." (ch. 13 p.8) I chose these quotes because they portray Christopher's sense of isolation. He is independent, and he needs to be separated in lots of situations. He is more comfortable with things that make sense to him on his own, rather than things that depend on interaction with other people.

The first quote shows that he lacks certain mental capacity. The second quote shows that he has difficulty grasping reality and consequences. The third shows that he doesn't understand certain stereotypes, he likes what he likes no matter what other's opinions are. These quotes show that Christopher might have some kind of learning disability, possibly autism.

This quote shows that Christopher listens to other people and is calm if people do things that are familiar to him.

"I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules..."
Christopher is trying to explain what he thinks life is. He knows he will never be able to learn all of the rules and traditions of life.

"This is how you work out what prime numbers are. First you write down all the positive whole numbers in the world. Then you take away all the numbers that are multiples of 2. Then you take away all the numbers that are multiples of 3. Then you take away all the numbers that are mulitples of 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 and so on. The numbers that are left are the prime numbers." (Ch. 19 pg. 11)
"Prime numbers are what is left when you have taken all the patterns away. I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them." (Ch. 22 pg. 12)
These quotes that are said, or thought, by Christopher and somewhat describes his mental being. In these first few chapters the reader is able to tell that Christopher is extrememly bright in the head, but doesn't know how to express them to people, our how to talk to people in general. He seems to know so much, but when a simple question comes up, like when the policeman asked if he killed the dog, he wasn't able to answer.

I chose these quotes to describe Christopher's personality and the way he thinks. He thinks about and likes logical things and gets confused if it's something more complicated like the joke his dad told him. He doesn't have very good social skills, so he likes things that you can "work out in your own mind" and think about "without having to ask some someone."

"Chapters in books are usually given the cardinal numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 and so on. But I have decided to give my chapters prime numbers 2,3,5,7,11,13 and so on because I like prime numbers."(ch.19 p.11)
"This will not be a funny book. I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them."(ch.13 p.8)
I picked these qutoes because they describe his character.

"This will not be a funny book. I cannot tell jokes because i do not undersand them."
These quotes explain the charicter of Christopher, they explain how he will do anything that makes him comfortable. they also show what Christopher likes, and does not like.

"I cannot tell jokes because I do not understand them." (ch. 13 p.8)
"The police car smelled of hot plastic aftershave and take-away chips." (ch.17 p.9)
"I like this fact. It is something you can work out in your own mind.." (ch. 17 p.10)

I chose these because it shows how much christopher really overthinks and how he really judges and pays close attention to detail to everthing. They are unique traits of him.He is a deep thinker also and he believes in the power of the mind.

"Then they worked out that the universe was expanding, that the stars were all rushing away from one another after the Big Bang, and the further the stars were away from us the faster they were moving, some of them nearly as fast as the speed of light, which was why thier light never reached us." (Ch.17 p. 10)
This quote tells us that Christopher believes in the Big Bang theory and it tells us a little bit about his beliefs and religion.
"But I have decided to give my chapters prime numbers 2,3,5,7,11,13 and so on because I like prime numbers" (ch.19 p.11)
This quote tells us that Christopher has a different way of thinking about things and he likes to be a little different. He is creative.
"This will not be a funny book. I do not tell jokes because I do not understand them."(ch. 13 p. 8)
This quote tells us that Christopher is slower than most people and does not have the same thinking patterns as other humans do.

"I was also wearing my watch and they wanted me to leave this at the desk as well but I said I needed to know exactly what time it is." pg. 13

"It was nice in the police cell. It was almost a perfect cube, 2 meters long by 2 meters wide by 2 meters high." Pg. 14

"I find people confusing." Pg. 14

I chsoe these quotes because the fist two show how Christopher likes to know exactly how things stand and likes things straightforeward. The last one shows how he is not very good at communicating with people.

I chose these quotes because they show how Christopher likes to question things that most people accept as just the way things are.

"When people tell you what to do it is usually confusing and does not make sense." (page 29)
"We passed four red cars in a row, which meant that is was a good day" (page 24)
"I know all the countries in of the world and their capital cities and every prime number up to 7057" (page 2)
These quotes describe what kind of personality Christopher has and has his own way of thinking about things. These different ways of thinking and his unique theories make christopher his own person.

"They asked me who my family was. I said it was Father, but Mother was dead." (Ch.23, pg.13)

"I think it should be called a lie because a pig is not like a day and people do not have skeletons in their cupboards." (Ch.29, pg.15)

I picked these quotes because I think they show how down to earth that Christopher is. He wants to know what is going on and not be lied to about it. Thats why he wants his watch so he knows what is going on and thats why he does not like metaphors because they are not true.

1. "I want it to mean me" (16)
2. "I find people confusing. This is for two main reasons. The first main reason is that people do a lot of talking without using any words...The second main reason is that people often talk using metaphors"(14)
3."And when they tried to take it(watch) off of me I screamed, and they let me keep it on" (13).

The reason I chose these quotes is because the first one talks about how Christian want his name to represent him and not something else and the I chose the second one because it seems to me that he has social problems when he finds all people confusing. The last quote i chose because it shows how immature the character is. What 15 year old hits a cop and then screams when they try to take his watch.

"With 13 attachments including a wire stripper and a saw and a toothpick and tweezers" (ch.23 p.13)

"I would be able to wee on the clothes and put them out" (ch.23 p14)

I choose these three quotes because they exclusively exhibited Christopher's youthful mind. He pays specific attention to minor details. The ideas that are shooting through his head are hilarious, and much different than those of a normal person.

"I wondered how I would escape if I was in a story," (Chap. 23, p. 14)
"...I needed to keep my watch on because I needeed to know exactly what time it was." (Ch. 23, p. 13)
"I find people confusing." (Ch. 29, p. 14)

These three quotes that I chose I think reflect who Christopher is. He has an imagination of a child, and thinks of how he would escape if he was in a story. He is also a presice person who seems like he wants everything to be exact and have a grasp of the concept. Kind of how he tries to have drawings of peoples facial expressions so he will know what they are thinking. He realizes that people make many faces and is confused by them because humans are difficult things to understand.

"I wondered how I would escape if I was in a story." (ch. 23, p. 14)
"This means that the word metaphor is a metaphor." (ch. 29, p.15)
I chose these three quotes, because they give some insight into Christopher's character. Needing to know what time it is describes Christopher's attention to detail. The 2nd quote shows how vivid an imagination Christopher has. The third quote tells the reader that Christopher thinks on a literal level, not enjoying metaphors because they represent something else.

"I find people confusing" (14).
"I don't want my name to mean a story about being kind and helpful. I want my name to mean me" (16).
I chose these quotes because they define Christopher. Although he is sometimes confused, he is still imaginative and an individual. The first quote shows how Christopher is an optimistic person. He is imagining himself in a story instead of thinking of his misery in jail. The second quote shows his confusion. He doesn't understand people's intentions. It is evident by the third quote that Christopher wants to be viewed as an individual.

I choose these quotes because they help to show, in my opinion, that Christopher is a very anilitical person and that he thinks about some things that some people don't even recognize.

"I find people confusing." (ch. 29 p.14) I chose this quote because i think this really shows that he knows that he does not do good with people and this could somehow affect him later in the book.
"I think what you just said was stupid." (ch 29 p.15) This quote shows that he just does not understand what human gestures mean since some can mean multiple things. He can not understand why this works and how people can understand what people are doing.
"I said that i need to keep my watch on because i needed to know exactly what time it was." (ch. 23 p. 13) I think this is an important quote because it shows a characteristic about Christopher that could be a problem in the future.

I chose these lines from the book because they show how unusual Christopher is. It shows his limited understanding of human emotions and ideas. For example, he has no proplem being in a prison cell, in fact he thinks it is nice.
