In all works of art there is a voice. Music, art, literature all speak to their audiences. Find a song that you feel speaks with a well-defined voice. List your favorite (NOT THE ENTIRE SONG) lyrics of that song as a comment. What is the voice you hear?

"Its fragile", she says to me.The hair in her eyes, she removes it smiling. There's a wound that I know this song could mend,A step in time for us will never end.

Oh, I'm waiting for the breakdown.Well nothing feels good being under the gun.Oh, I'm waiting for the breakdown. Is it ever gonna come?

Mae "The Breakdown"

Voice is that of a guy who has been hurt before and is waiting for the other shoe to drop in the relationship.

There are times in life when you gotta crawl,
Lose your grip, trip an' fall
When you can't lean on no-one else:
That's when you find yourself
I've been around an' I've noticed that,
Walkin's easier when the road is flat
Them danged ol' heels'll get you every time
Yeah, the good Lord gave us mountains,
So we could learn how to climb

This world ain't fair,
It can knock you on your butt
You can just lie there,
Or you can get back up
You gotta get back up

"Moutains" by Lonestar
In this song the voice that I hear is one of someone who has been knocked down by the hard times in life, but has gotten back up on their own to feet to go and fight back with whatever comes their way

This is the voice of someone believing in God.

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don't give up the fight!

- Bob Marley

I think what Bob is saying here is pretty obvious. He is telling listeners, pretty plainly, to stand up for themselves. Bob is a pretty big religious figure in Rastafaria, and he is singing directly to this religion in the song. However, I think it is also an appropriate suggestion for everyone. Stand up for yourself and don't give up... kinda hyuge.

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

-John Lennon: "Imagine"

Imagine is one of the most powerful and well defined songs. This quote defines Lennon as a seeker of peace and unity between all men and women. He wants everyone to join him in his goal to rid the world of war, greed, etc...

How many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, 'n' how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, 'n' how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

"Blowin' in the Wind" by Bob Dylan
This song reflects how no one wants the bad things in life to go on, and yet it is people who perpetuate these problems. Also how people take all the beautiful things in the world for granted (couplet 1).

Tell me, did you fall from a shooting star,

One without a permanent scar,

And did you miss me while you were looking at yourself out there?

"Drops of Jupiter" by Train

I hear the voice of a man strained by the fear that his girlfriend has outgrown him in some way.

Ben Harper's "Walk Away":

Oh no- here comes that sun again.
And (that) means another day without you my friend.
And it hurts me to look into the mirror at myself.
And it hurts even more to have to be with somebody else.

And it's so hard to do and so easy to say.
But sometimes - sometimes,
you just have to walk away - walk away.

With so many people to love in my life, why do I worry about one?
But you put the happy in my ness, you put the good times into my fun.

And it's so hard to do and so easy to say.
But sometimes - sometimes,
you just have to walk away - walk away and head for the door.

In this song I believe in what Harper is trying to say. Whoever is in this song loves someone yet there is no way that they can be together. It doesn't matter why they are apart it is just the thought of being away from someone who you just want to be with all the time.

When I was only seventeen, couldn't wait for twenty one
I'd hang around on Clayton Street in the bars there gettin' drunk
A baseball cap and a fake ID would get me in the clubs
Then I would dance with the college girls and lie about who I was
I'd say "I'm pre-Med. here at UGA, live on Milledge Avenue.
I was raised over in Buckhead, I drive a BMW."

Twenty-one by Corey Smith

In this song, Corey is singin about how alot of kids wish away there youthfullness to grow up and be someone they are not. I think that everyone does this because we all feel that being older is more fun, so we have to lie about who we are.

Take your time, don't live to fast
Troubles will come and they will pass

"Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd

An extremely recognizable song, but still extremely relevant and applicable to anyone's life. The point is not to let your days go by too quickly. We tend to get so caught up in our busy lives we forget to enjoy and savor each moment. Also, equally as important, terrible things are bound to happen- that's life, but better times are always waiting.

Love is the answer at least for most of the questions in my heart
Like why are we here? And where do we go? And how come it’s so hard?
It’s not always easy and sometimes life can be deceiving
I’ll tell you one thing, it’s always better when we’re together

The voice of this person is that he thinks love can conquer everything. Even though life is hard, with love you can get through it.

The woman in you is the worry, the worry in me...
But youre so innocent, Ill take all the blame...
No apology is expected
Love carved sorry in his face
The woman in you is the worry, the worry in me.... Ben Harper-"The Woman in You"
The voice I hear is good ole Ben speaking about how he trusted this woman. He loved her, and she has hurt him. He was worried about nature rather than the person.

I love this question and just have to answer it.
It took some thought to narrow it down to one song but I found this one:
"Live for today
We’ll dream tomorrow
We’ve got big plans in sight
We’ll take this city and by nightfall...
The bright lights are calling

Everything is going our way
Everything is just as we've planned
This is our future (from what we've heard)
And I’ve still got your hand"
~Time and Confusion (Anberlin)
It's perfect and describes my mottos on life.

Sing out, sing out, sing out, sing out
I know you will
Sing out, sing out sing out, sing out
It's up to you
Sing out, sing out

Don't wait for daylight
Don't run from tonight
Just open your eyes
The stars fade with the light

-"Don't Wait for Daylight" by Needtobreathe
In this song, I hear the voice of someone who is ready for change. He is telling us that we can make a difference, and that we can't just run away from the problems that we are faced with. We need to stand up and express our opinions.

Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven.

"Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton.
In this song the voice i hear is the voice of someone who has lost his son and is wondering if his son would recognize him in heaven. The voice also hints that in heaven there is peace and his tears of grief will end in heaven.

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic, don't you think?
A little too ironic and yeah I really do think

-Alanis Morissette "Ironic"

This is a girl that has a bit of a dry humor about life. All the little inconveniences in life, and ones that really slap you in the face. She talks about all of these situations where life seems a little ironic. I really like this song, it speaks to me because life's little inconvienences happen to everyone. Whether big or small, people deal with things that are irritating, and the best way to deal with them is to just have a little humor about life.

"If you find yourself here
On my side of town
I pray that you'd come to my door

And talk to me
Like you don't know
What we ever fought about
I don't remember anymore

I just know that she warms my heart
And knows what all my imperfections are

And she said that I was the brightest
Little firefly in her jar"

"Brightest" by Copeland

In this song there is the voice of a guy who realized that he isn't something special but in the eyes of this girl he is. And I think he believes that there is always going to be one person that brings the best out of you and once you find that person, don't let them get away.

Neon shines through smokey eyes tonight
It's 2 A.M., I'm drunk again,
it's heavy on my mind
Excuse me please, one more drink
Could you make it strong?
'Cause I don't need to think
She broke my heart
My Grace is Gone
one more drink and I'll be gone
One drink to remember
Then another to forget
I think of every day to find
A love like you again
"Grace is Gone" Dave Matthews Band

Reading the lyrics i think its pretty easy to hear whats going on in this song. Apparently a guy got dumped and is trying to drink his memory of his girl away. Its kind of sad but its a good song.

One good thing about music, when it hits you
Feel no pain (repeat)
So hit me with music, hit me with music
Hit me with music, hit me with music now
I got to say trench town rock
I say don't watch that
Trench town rock, big fish or sprat
Trench town rock, you reap what you sow
Trench town rock, and everyone know now
Trench town rock, don't turn your back
Trench town rock, give the slum a try
Trench town rock, never let the children cry
Trench town rock, 'cause you got to tell JAH, JAH

"Trenchtown Rock" by Bob Marley

I believe this song expresses the joy I have for music. No matter the situation there is always music to suite it. I love music.

"Drive" by Incubus

Sometimes, I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I can't help but ask myself how much
I'll let the fear take the wheel and steer.
It's driven me before, and it seems to have a vague,
haunting mass appeal.
But lately I'm beginning to find that I
should be the one behind the wheel.

This is the voice of a man who previously did whatever anyone else did but is now getting his life back and doing the things that are important to him.

"My chain, these ain?t conflict diamonds,

Though it's thousands of miles away,
Sierra Leone connect to what we go through today.
Over here it's a drug trade, we die from drugs.
Over there, they die from what we buy from drugs."
-Kanye West

This is a feeling of Kanye's that he is torn. He likes to be blinging, but he knows that what this takes is people dieing and people get harmed just to mine for diamonds. Is it right, what is right or wrong in the worl today. His voice shows that he is confused by the standards of today.

Heaven’s gates won’t open up for me
With these broken wings I’m fallin’
And all I see is you
These city walls ain’t got no love for me
I’m on the ledge of the eighteenth story
And oh I scream for you

"Savin' Me" by Nickelback
In this song the writer is in complete dispair. He is on the verge of breaking. You can hear it in what he says how he describes him self screamin. He is on the ledge about to jump, scared. Yet he wants to be saved.

DavidW3 said...

To change the world,
It starts with one step
However small,
First step is hardest of all
Once you get to your gate
You will walk in tall
You said you never did,
‘Cause you might die trying

‘Cause you might die trying
‘Cause you

If you close your eyes
‘Cause the house is on fire
And think you couldn’t move
Until the fire dies
The things you never did
‘Cause you might die trying

Dave Matthews "You Might Die Trying"

The voice is that if you dont do something important because you may fail or die than you are worse off then trying. Dave Matthews is trying to tell people that you should follow your dreams and try your hardest because if you don't then you can't accomplish anything. Who cares if you fail, it is better than thinking of what you could do.

Ohh take your time...don't live to fast,

This is from Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd. It's saying not to go through life in a rush. Take time to chill out and see what's going on around you. And don't sweat the small stuff, because it will all go away eventually.

Why can't we overcome this wall
Well, maybe it's just because i didn't know you at all

Jeff Buckley - "Last Goodbye"

This is the voice of someone who is so in love with someone, but knows it will never work. He wants to tell her how much she meant to him before he goes. Sometime's love isn't enough.

"Like a warm drink it seeps into my soul
Please just leave me right here on my own.
Later on you could spend some time with me,
If you want to, all at sea."

"All At Sea" by Jamie Cullum

The voice of this song is of someone who is enjoying the peacefullness of being on their own for a little while. They are ok with spending time with other people, but admit that every so often they need some time by themselves.

And you might think you got away with

"360" by Josh Hoge

In this song the voice is saying what goes around comes around. Be careful what you do because it is eventually going to backfire and someone is going to do it to you. I think in this song he was actually singing about a girlfriend that cheated on him, but the idea can be applied to many situations in life.

Walked away to another plan.
Gonna find another place, maybe one I can stand.
I move on to another day,
to a whole new town with a whole new way.
Went to the porch to have a thought.
Got to the door and again, I couldn't stop.
You don't know where and you don't know when.
But you still got your words and you got your friends.
Walk along to another day.
Work a little harder, work another way.

"The World at Large" by Modest Mouse.
I hear the voice of someone who has gone through some hard times and wants to start over in their life.

"People are People" APC

I hear the voice of sorrow and frustration. Everything going on now and in the past can be traced back to one man who hated another man, who held a grudge. Why? There is no adequate reason. Please, "I can't understand,What makes a man, Hate another man. Help me understand."

The time to hesitate is through

"Light my Fire" The Doors.

In this song, Jim Morrison is trying to say that you cant wait to do what you want. No matter what it is go for it and do what you want to do no matter what anybody else says, or what the consequences might be.

waiting on the world to change
now if we had the power

they would have never missed a Christmas
no more ribbons on their door
and when you trust your television
what you get is what you got
cause when they own the information, oh
they can bend it all they want

that's why we're waiting
waiting on the world to change
we keep on waiting
waiting on the world to change"
-John Mayer-

This song represents a political voice. It is saying that our generation, which is labeled as poitically and morally apathetic, is, despite the label, waiting for our opportunity to change the world. It says that we would do things differently, including the war. It also mentions the media and because the media is our only form of news, it can be bent one way or another.

Sister Hazel, "All for You"

The voice is of a person who has realized that he wants to dedicate his life to someone else. He wants to be there for that person and be that person's support.

Oh look at how she listens
She says nothing of what she thinks
She just goes stumbling through her memories
Staring out on to Grey Street
She thinks, "Hey,
How did I come to this?
I dream myself a thousand times around the world,
But I can't get out of this place"

There's an emptiness inside her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
But all the colors mix together - to grey
And it breaks her heart

"Grey Street" by Dave Matthews Band
This song is about a girl who feels lonely in her life and wishes she could live a different life and leave her old life behind.
