Vocabulary Helper

This week we have a vocabulary quiz on unit 2. I was considering having a podcast for each unit of words. A podcast is a recording of someone reading the word, definition, sentence, and some synonyms for the word. We would host it online and you could subscribe on iTunes. The podcasts would be created by some of YOU using either your own computer and microphone (I would show you how) or using a computer at school. These podcasts can be downloaded to your computer and/or your iPod so you could study "on the go".

1) Do you think this would be helpful? If so, how would you personally utilize it?
2) Do you have a microphone integrated into your computer or an external microphone?
3) Would you consider making one for a unit? What should be the reward for hosting one?

Here are some examples of some podcasts my classes made last year with our last novel of the year.

I don't think that this method would help very much. In all honesty, I do not think that many people would utilize it at all. To suscribe to ITunes, record the podcast, and then memorize it would be much more work than just making flash cards. It is a creative way to learn vocab, and I give you props for that. However, (some people may disagree) I think vocab is pretty easy to learn with the right amount of time.

i think that it is definitly something to be tried, very interesting if you ask me! I would probably try it the first time and see how it helps me, depending on that, I would decide if I would keep doing it.

No I don't have a microphone thingy.

Yeah, I'm up for whatever. Maybe like an extra 10 pt. grade, or add points to a bad grade score. The grade could be up to 25 points maybe?? Just a thought.

I really am not sure how I feel about this. I dont have a computer at home that is always in reach and I dont have an ipod. So this would not help me personally. But if everyone else thinks its time worthy, then go for it! But I know I wouldnt use it. Call me old fashioned but I dont mind studying out of the book.

It could be interesting to atleast try it for a unit and let each class have a say so on how they feel about it. Sure it might take some work, but if you study with a dictaphone its basically the same thing other than you are able to utilize it anytime and everywhere with you iPod. I think I have an external microphone on my computer, and I definatly have iTunes.

This method I don't think is right for me. I am not always able to get to a computer at home. Plus when i am using the the computer I'm not on the internet. Don't have an ipod so this is not for me. if the internet is for you and you have an ipod then this might be for you. working out of the book suits me just fine.

I think this would be really cool! I would load it on my ipod so when I work out I can also study English! This would help me kill two birds with one stone! Also, hearing it helps me learn the vocabulary even quicker. I think this would be a great idea! I have a Mac with a microphone in my computer so I could make one for the next unit. I would not want to because listening to myself is boring. If it was one of my friends, I would pay attention more! The host should get bonus points!

This opportunity seems like it would be fun, but I honestly think that I can learn vocabulary easily the old-fashion way. It would be really interesting to learn how to use all the new technology you are talking about, but some students may not have iTunes on their computer or an iPod. I also do not have a microphone in my computer(or atleast not one that I am aware of), so it would be difficult for me to do the assignment at home.

I think this be a good way to study while you are away from home and you don't have your backpack. When I read something aloud or someone reads something to me, I tend to understand what I am learning a little bit easier. Studying from the book gets boring, but if you do use a Podcast, I think it can bring something new to the class. I would be glad to use this method if you decide to use it!

This method of studying is interesting and would work, however I think that it is too much. The old fashion way of memorizing vocabulary words with flash cards is much easier and I think it would work just as well. Also not everyone at our school may have itunes or know how to use podcast and it would probably be harder to be getting it ready for use than it would to just not do it at all. I have to admit though it is a great idea, but I just don’t think the benefit would be much better than just regular studying

I think it would be a good method. Seeing all the people at school using their ipods i would think that over 3/4 of our class has an ipod. If we were to do this i would definitely help because i believe that it would help people do better on the test. I could listen to it a couple of times before the quiz and you could pause it after each word and then recite to yourself the definition and other stuff. It would be a great tool for me. The reward should be 5 points of bonus on the quiz or 10, cause 10 is good.

Whoa, I didn't know you could do your own podcasts. That would be cool to see, but I don't think it would be all that helpful. I agree with some of the other comments that learning it out of the book is usually a lot easier. Cool idea though.

1) It might be helpful for some that really struggle with vocabulary, however I doubt that many of our classmates have a serious problem with it.

For me its just easier to make flash cards and learn it that way.Although having them on my ipod to read along with would probably help. However if I didn't like someones voice that wouldnt learn anything.

2) I have an external microphone.

3) I wouldnt want to but I'd have more incentive if I got bonus points.

I believe that this would be a good thing to try. I would probably listen to it while reading over the words in the book to help me focus on it better.
I do not think I have microphone. There used to be one floating around the computer but I do not see it anymore.
I could deal with making one for a unit. A group project would be even better, possibly for vocab on the exams. A replacement quiz grade would be ideal but ten or fifteen points would be nice.

I think this is a very creative way to vocabulary, but it sounds like a lot of work to simply learn the words. I'm sure if we made this possible, I would try it, although simply making note cards has always worked and required little effort. I do not have one of those microphones but I use iTunes frequently. If this helps other people then great, but I just peronally do not think I would benefit from hearing the words as a visual learner.

I don't think method would be as 'fun' as it sounds. Many people can not even have a simple paper turned in on time because of computer problems. Also, not everybody is subscribed to iTunes. This would be a nice way to learn vocab because it is differnt, but in the end I think it would cause many people trouble.

I think we should try this because it is something new to everyone and could be fun. The only problem is that I dont have a microphone in my computer. For who ever did make the podcast could get some bonus points according to how well they do..

I am not sure that this method of learning vocabulary would help me. I am not very good with technology so I am not sure if I would be able to figure it out. Also I dont think that I have a microphone on my computer. Usually it doesnt take me very long to learn the vocabulary. However, this method would probably help some people, but I dont think that I would benefit from it.

i've always heard that it is a good study technique to record the information and listen to it over and over again right before you go to bed. For that reason, i think that this idea could work. Personally, i probably wouldn't download it off itunes because im a more visual learner. I think the idea is very creative and technological, but in the long run i think it would be more of a hassle for students to get download off itunes, than to just study from their vocab book. Although i probably wouldn't use it, i would be willing to make one for a vocab unit. I think bonus points would be a great reward!

I'm with matt on this one. I really do not think that people will use this very often at all. Yeah it does seem like a cool thing but it is way too complicated. What's wrong with flashcards?

JayF3 said...

Its a good idea, but not all technology should be used for learning. I think that it would be much more effort to download a podcast to your ipod and then listen to it over and over than to just read the words out of your book. I have a Mac with a microphone so I would be able to create a podcast and am open to new ideas, but it just seems like a waste of time.

CaseyF5 said...

I think that it is a good idea. I mean if you don't want to use it or you don't have an iPod you can still use your book. I know that i tend to lose my vocab book every year so if I was able to get it on my iPod that would be helpful.

I am not sure if i have a microphone or not.

Bonus points should be given for hosting one. I think like 10 or 15 points would be good.

I think that the vocabulary podcasts is a really neat idea, but I do not think I would utilize it. I don't have an external microphone, and I think for vocabulary it is easy enough to just use your book or notecards to learn the words. I'm not sure that anyone would put in that much time to do it on the computer.

gordonw7 said...

I dont know if I would use this much. I dont think its that hard to learn the words just by looking in the vocab book so I would probably just do that. And to do the podcast, you would have to be on a computer w/ itunes installed so u would only be able to study for it on your home computer. I dont have that microphone thing either so it just seems like too much trouble.

I see this having both pros and cons I like the podcast idea. It is creative and would be fun to do for a change. However I think most people would find that trying to use it as a study tool would prove to be pretty useless. They would end up listening to people trying to pronounce difficult to pronounce words and making fun of them for it. Although this isn't the best idea for a podcast I would like to try podcast's for a different type of assignment.
