War.... what is it good for?

With all of the different things happening in the world, the Iraqi War, the genocide in Sudan, North Korea testing nuclear weapons, many people wonder, when is it just to go to war?

So what are your thoughts?
When is it our place to go to war?
Or more importantly, when is it our responsibility to go to war?

Personally war scares the crap out of me. Thank god that I live in one of the most technological advanced countries in military tactics. My question is what is the UN for? Didn't we create it to help keep us from going to war and keep countries from doing things that arent just? I mean I guess it has done it's job for the most part but it can be much better. When we go to war it is nothing other than an immature way to go and duke out each others hate. I do agree that sometimes war is just, but that is only in a few cases and I think that all of this should go through the UN.

War is a tricky subject for me. When it comes down to it I am at neither extreme. My thoughts are that basically sometimes war is undoubtably neccessary. I feel that when there are injustices taking place in our world, it is our responsibility to correct them. If we simply stand by and watch, we are as guilty as those committing the injustices. However, I do acknowledge that war is not something to be rushed in to. It is not always the answer, and I feel that in most cases it should be considered the last resort. Unfortunately, sometimes we have to resort to last resorts.

This i believe is a very tricky topic, obviously it is, or there wouldnt be all this fuss! i feel as though war is a last resort to go to. Because the world is a corrupt place, it is hard to justify actions by starting a war. In a utopia, things would just work out, talk it over, hug and kiss and make-up. If there's an injustice, then fix it. But, sometimes war is obviously necessary, but i think it is appopriate when all else fails.

I think that war is a situation in which we should enter if we feel that our lives and freedom are in jeopardy. Those in other countries that create terrorist and nuclear threats should be taken seriously and we should control the situation by any means possible and if that requires a war then that is what it takes.

Going to war is a very big commitment. I really think that if right now we went into war, our country would do very poorly. Americans do not trust the government or our President to make wise decisions because they think that they have no idea what the officals are talking about. This really frustrates me because in times like the Iraqi "War" and the nuclear testing in Korea have no trust in our govenment to make the right decisions for our country. War is very scary to me, but I feel that if Congress declared war, I know it would be for the best. I think as citizens we should support our govenment's thoughts and realize that they have to look out for the whole country and not just us individually.

I would have to say that when I heard about the genocide in Darfur I was completely shocked that in today's world we are dealing with genocide. I am very touched by this subject because I am empathetic due to the Holocaust. It is so hard to believe that there is mass murder going on in this world.

Though it may sound simple, a country should go to war when the people of that country are being harmed by a common enemy. In WWII German subs and Japenese pilots were attacking America and killing Americans. Though we could stand idle, the enemy was not only harming us, but slowly defeating our allies. We had a defined enemy and attacked that enemy. Unfortunately this is not the case in the wars America has been in lately. In Vietnam our enemies looked the same as our allies the only difference was their belief in the type of goverment that should rule. Same in Iraq. Though war kills innocent people it also protects the innocent and the well being of the world. I've signed up with the selective service office and will die for my country if needed. War definitely not a good thing, to me though, it is neccessary.

Well right now in the world things are a little crazy. However I don't get the feeling that we are being threatened by anyone. Because of this I think we need to work on our own home front problems. Our economy is on the verge of shambles. With that in mind and no apparent danger to our great nation I think we need to keep close tabs on what’s going on but it's hardly a reason to get into a war.

War is a tough thing to just rush into. Obviously there are steps taken to determine when we should wage war and when we should not. A lot of times the U.S. has intervened in an affair between two countries when it may not have been the best idea. We can't always jump into situations and try to stop every bad guy from ruling a country. So many problems have come and so many lives have been lost because of war and it is a subject that does not need to be taken lightly or just thrown around.

I think war is a last resort. It is our place to go to war when we are being threated and there is no other possibility to solve the problem. It is our responsiblity to go to war when we are again being threaten. I'm glad I'm going to college so there is no chance of me fight in a war for a while. I hope we don't have a war with Nuclear weapons.

War is a very controversal subject. I feel fortunate enough to live in the United States and to feel safe here. I think that war is only necessary if horrible injustices have been made. If our country gets attacked then we deserve the right to fight back. War should not be something that our country or any country rushes into. It should be something that goes through steps in order to follow through with. Unfortunately, in the world we live in today...war just had to be the answer to the attack on our country.

War is necessary sometimes for the protection of our nation and values. Although war can be a horrible situation sometimes, it usually is unavoidable. Since our nation is very strong and advanced we are called upon to not only defend our nation, but other nations as well. I agree that war is just because we have to protect our nation and allies.

I am personally not happy with the way the Iraqi War has turned out, but then again im not in the position to say that it was wrong. The government knows alot more than the general public and therefore have a better understanding about the situation. I believe it is the US place to go to war when our nations borders are threatened. War has been going on since the beggining of time, and war will alwasy go on for as long as we live.

MattO3 said...

Unfortunately, people dissagree on many subjects and think it necessary to go to war. Or others begin wars in order to gain power through fear. Others go to war because of religious beliefs. Regardless, though, wars are going to be fought because people disagree. They have been fought since humanity's beginning, and they will continue to be fought. The only reason I can think it just to start a war is if it is to protect people. For example, if the United States attacks North Korea preemptivly because we have evidence that they want to launch nukes at us, that's fine by me. I would rather have a smaller loss of life in a conventional war than massive loss of life due to the launching of nukes by both sides.

Whether going to war is the right thing is sometimes tricky. My cousin just had his two week leave from Afghanistan last weekend and we spent alot of time together. To see him only weighing 140 pounds and his personality has changed drastically scared me to death. When war is not present in our home towns, we seem to forget about it. But it affects the ones that are risking their lives for our country. 18 year old boys are being killed and havent even begun to live their lives. Who knows when war is necessary and when it is not. We will never really know, we all just have our opinions. But i believe that we shuold always support the men that are fighting whether we believe it is necessary or not.

I think that war is a necessity, but there is an appropriate time and an inappropriate time for it. I think that war should be a last resort, but if it comes down to it, a country has to defend itself. Some issues that wars are fought over are completely inappropriate. Also, without war, there would be no way to put down bad governments or regimes.

AllenK5 said...

I think that war is something that is very necessary in certain times and places. It is our place to go to war whenever a country is in need or is experiencing the affects of unjust leaders. However, it is our responsibility to only go to war when Americans or our practices as a nation are being hindered or seriously threatened.

StuartS5th said...

War is something that countries must go through with to better the world. However, it is very difficult to determine under what circumstances war should be declared. I believe that we should go to war if an agressing nation starts murdering innocent people. Also, if a country threatens our country and we have proof that they have the ability to harm us, war is inevitable. Presently, North Korea is testing its nuclear weapons and possibly threatening Japan. If the U.S. finds evidence of a threat against Japan, we could possibly be involved in a WWIII.

Living in the US war seems distant for me. Although war is an extremely important issue, I’ve never had to deal with the tragedies of what war can cause. I feel that because I am Jewish, the war in Iraq should be of importance to me. Although it is to a point, I feel very uneducated to ever voice an opinion on the subject. The time for a nation to go to war should depend on the civilian casualties. The fact that a nation is losing lives should show the time is right to go to war.

Peace is never brought about with war. There is never really a winner in war either, because when you fight a war people die on both sides. I dont see how a bullet can bring freedom and peace to countries with different idiologys than us. If you take iraq for example we claimed they had WMD and they didnt, and we go over their find nothing; taer apart there infrastructure and terrorize their people...are we doing something good?

War is just when a country is legitimately threatened by an outside force that endangers the safety and well-being of the nation's citizens and government. The specifics of legitimacy are less clear, and are far more open to debate, but the necessity of war is not debatable. While peace is ideal, mankind's inherent nature requires that we deal in death to ensure that peace. Much like we have criminals who, for various reasons, betray the good of the whole and must be corrected or destroyed, we also have nations whose leaders act for either their own sake or the sake of their people at everyone else's expense.

The question of war before the advent of modern warfare was far easier to answer, however. When war could be fought locally, and without harm to the long-term survival of the species, it had been an easy solution to conflict. But the development of atomic and potent biological weapons forces us to look beyond our conflicts and towards the well-being of the human race.

As much it might benefit us to destroy an opposing nation, we now have to look at the potential world-altering consequences that could easily follow. The goal, for the most part, has become to contain the production of dangerous weapons and, more importantly, socioeconomic issues that prompt violent action.

think war is something that jsut be a last resort because it really just isn't a great situation.I think that if we are threated it may be neccessary but honestly it is a really hard topic and honestly ive read a couple of peoples responses and i think that this topic is kind of unness. for people to discuss b/c a lot of people are just butchering this topic out of ignorance sorry to be so blunt but thats that

War is a very important aspect in our daily life. There is no way to avoid it as sad as that may seem. There are many bad people in the world that we must eliminate to provide safety for the american way of life. Many nations are starving due to their leaders or are getting executed due to their beleifs. We are just trying to help change that so that people can live a much better life. I support everthing our nation has done and will do. If I had the ability i would go to Iraq at this very moment to help transform it to a much better, stronger, nation. I greatly support the military and would gladly do my part if called upon at any moment. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

War is a sticky topic for most people. I believe that war is something that is neccessary in some cases, and others it is not. I am not on one extreme of the topic. When our country is asked to, or for our own need we should go to war if the cause is beneficial to our country or another without harming ours. However, war should not be jumped into. It is also our duty to not sit and watch another country kill and demolish another. It is our part to help and give aid to the one in need. War in many cases is very neccessary, but should be heavily weighed before we jump into it.

I can on either way on this one. Sometimes I can see that the right thing to do is to go to war and sometimes not to. I do agree with what is the UN doing? They don't seem to be doing such a good job if you ask me.

I think there are other cases than the country being directly harmed for that country to go to war. For example the genocide in the Sudan, Darfur, which is repeating history and letting a second holocaust take place. I believe that as the U.S., the most powerful nation, we must take action and help stop this holocaust. No, i dont feel a war is necessaray and needed but I feel its terrible for U.S. citizens, whom the majoriy hold strong sympathy for the holocaust in Germany, would allow a second holocaust to occur.

I feel like it is hard to be rules or parameters to going to war. Each situation is going to be different. When a situation has been analyzed and the solution to a problem is war, that is when being just to go to war is the closest. Going to war, I feel, could possibly never be just. In a world of today it is necessary at times though. The best stance to take, which is what many past presidents have taken, for example in WWI and WWII, is make a neutrality possible as much as possible. Who is to say though that the best route would have been first thing entering war.

For me it is hard to say when a country should go to war. I think that it is our place to go to war when our country is in danger. I think that it is also our responsibility to support the governments decisions because they are trying to make the best decisions for our country.

FrannieC5 said...

There are only a few times where it has been just to go to war. The genocide in Sudan is such a big issue is todays world. There is little going on to try and help them. War is not the answer for this situation. North Korea testing nuclear weapons, is also a big issue. I dont think that we should go to war over this issue either. Just because they were testing them, doesn't mean that they were going to kill us with them. I mean, I could be wrong (since I haven't watched the news in a few days.) I also think that we should stop the war in Iraq. We have already done enough damage. In fact, we have done their country more damage, than they had started with.

In my opinion i think war is godd and makes other countries realize that the US is nobody to be messed with. Yet i don't think we should be the world police. The government says they don't want to be in war but at the same time they continue to send troops to many countries including Iraq. Most of the time war is necessary, and when it is not necessary it just shows that we strongarm other countries but in my opion that can be a good and bad thing.

War is something that you can't just rush into. But when we were attacked on 9/11 i think it was right for us to go fight against them. I think right now we should mainly be worried about our own problems. Also we should be more worried about getting drugs and other things out of our country. But if we have to go to war to keep our country safe it is worth doing so their is not anohter 9/11.

gordonw7 said...

I believe that war is unavoidable sometimes in order to protect our country. It is also necessary sometimes in order to protect countries that are not strong enough to protect themselves. We have done a good job of trying to defend the nations that need protection by going to war.

natalies7 said...

Sometimes war is necessary but other times it is not. Only after trying other things, should we resort to war. Even though it should never be rushed into, we must take responsibility in protecting the people. If that is what it takes to correct unjust rulers or situations, then there is no excuse not to engage in war. We just need to keep in mind the huge sacrifice war is. War is not always the right thing, but in many situations it is necessary.

In general, I hate war. I think that 95% of the time, It is not the way to go. War is only something that should be used as a very last resort when every other path has been attempted. However, sometimes it's really the only thing left to do, as horrible as it is. I can only hope that the United States will always do their utmost best to avoid war. Killing innocent people, as young as 18 years old, is not the way to solve problems that could have been solved diplomatically.
