Research papers... hot or not!

Ok, I know it is a lame title, but how is the process going?

  • What has been your biggest obstacle so far?
  • What are you having trouble finding?
  • Post your problems here OR post your solutions to other's comments.

My biggest problem with research papers is just getting started. Once I get all my information you still have to pick three points that you can write a lot about. Once I get started with my paper I am fine, it is just the initial planning and figuring out how you are going to make sure all your points relate back to the thesis etc.

I seem to be facing some trouble this year, because in years past we seemed to spend several weeks in the library researching but as far as this year is concerned we have spent 3 days. It's ok Mrs. Caldwell, but if you actually expect us to write these papers deadlines will need to be extended and more in class time will be nessecary.

I think that my biggest obstacle with research papers is keeping focus within them. A lot of times I feel I can sum up everything I need to say in about 2-3 pages, but with 6 pages I generally add a lot of fluff to get through it, which, in turn hurts my grade. I am also having trouble finding a surplus of topics relating to the relationships in Taming of the Shrew.

Like Caroline, my biggest obstacle is finding the motivation to put my pen to paper. I have plenty of sources to get started, but I have some kind of mental block preventing me from doing actual work. I feel like Peter from Office Space where I sit around all day and only do about 15 minutes of true, hard work.

The hardest thing about the research paper for me is, as I have said earlier, actually doing the research. For me the most difficult part is finding the sources and quotes I'm going to use.

My problem would have to be just researching the topic. Its easy to know what you want to say and your points but finding enough information on it is rough. It seems like i keep going back to the same websites that have nothing i can use or I am getting the same one article that I can use over and over again at different websites

I am having a lot of trouble getting started. I feel like I am lost and I do not know where to begin. I am having trouble also trying to figure out what my thesis is going to be, so once i get that down hopefully it will be easier then.

I'm having the biggest problem finding a thesis! I had one..don't remember what it is now, however I do remember it was too broad to make a research paper out of. Now, I'm sitting here in the library trying to find another thesis. I know more problems I come across are finding and citing sources. It's not really that HARD, but very annoying and I hate doing it.

I love the fact that we have this freedom with the whole process, but im a little confused about the E notecards. If it is possible maybe one day in class we could pull it up on the MAC lap top and run through it. Also I'm sorry Mrs. Caldwell that i always seem really confused about the places my sources need to come from, but i just want to make sure that i'm doing this right. So it would be great if you could let me know how many need to come from a book, internet, AVL...etc. Thanks!

i think that this has been the easiest research paper that we have had so far, except the fact that I picked a bad play I think for myself. Even though I know a lot of information about it, I just can't seem to pick and stay with a thesis, and I think mrs caldwell you noticed that today, haha. but other than that, the researching is fine and I love all the help that you have given us.

carolinec1 said...

The thing that I am having the most trouble with is picking out the three points. I have information I just can't narrow it down to three good points to argue. Once I finally narrow it down, I think it will go pretty smoothly.

My problem with the research papers tends to be correct MLA citation within the paper. Some English teachers teach it one way and others another way. I would greatly appreciate it if you would show us in class how to document a simple embedded quote.

I agree with caroline and austin. It is hard getting started, but I think the outline will help get the ball rolling. I still feel like I don't exactly know where I'm going with my paper eventhough I have my thesis and everything. I'm thinking the outline will fix that though.

I think the biggest problem is definetly narrowing down what information goes under what point. My points are closely related and it is hard to keep the focus on the right topic. I know keeping focused will be the hardest part because like Drew said I usually add alot of extra stuff.

AdamK1 said...

My problem with the research paper is im not good at finding information on my topic. Also I am not not motivated to do my research paper on my topic. One other thing is that im too lazy and tired to work outside of the classroom by going to the library.

Me been havin trouble written me engwish paper. As you know me cant read no good and rite any good. But I will do me best to gut this paper dun befor da dedline!

I will reiterate what most have said are the two core problems with research papers in general: getting started and lacking the motivation. I am in agreement with elliot that library days truly give us the time and the focus to get our paper done. I also think it is so tough to focus this year on the RSP because of the acting, the overloading in other classes, and, of course, senioritis. Extended deadlines on the paper would be greatly appreciated by all. Thanks Mrs C.

I have a hard time writing the first paragraphs. There is always a struggle to write a thesis that is going to cover just three points yet make a 6 page paper. Also the fact that it is second semester isnt really helping much, not that you could have helped that...I'm just saying that its hard to stay focused

willh6 said...

My biggest obstacle is the research part. The topic that I have does not seem to have any critisizms. Once I find those I do not think that I will have any problems

The hardest thing to me when doing the research paper process is the actual research. Finding my sources and quotes has been my biggest obstacle.

Mitchell M 6 said...

The research is the worst part of the research paper. It is hard to find and we haven't had a lot of time in the library. I can't wait til it is over so I will have nothing to worry about.

My biggest obstacle with research papers is finding criticism on the specific topic that I chose. I can find numerous criticisms and analyses of Hamlet, but I can't seem to find many for appearance versus reality. Also I have trouble finding quotes from the actual play.

My biggest problem is trying to find enough critical articles and i think in the future its going to be trying to write six pages because i have never written over four. - BakerB3

I seem to be facing some trouble this year but my biggest problem is just getting started. I think we need more library days. Research papers are not hot.

charlotteg3 said...

I do not like research papers very much. This year my biggest problem is finding things on my topic because even though the librarians are very helpful. Also, it was very hard to choose a topic, but other than that things have been going great!!!!!!

walkerd3 said...

So far my biggest problem is getting my thesis statement to flow. After that I can get started on finding research. But then I also have to get my three paragraphs to flow. So my biggest problem would be making my paper to flow.

the biggest prolblem that i have with reseach papers (and everything else)is just getting started. I hate having to look stuff up so much that I wait to the very last minute to get everything done. As long as I keep a constant pace, though, I'm usually fine.

GriffB5 said...

I can't find any information on my topic. None of the library people are any good at finding information for me. I hate having a broad choice of topics.

AbbyW5 said...

My biggest problem has been finding critcism on my topic. I sometimes feel really repetetive within my research papers because I have to make it so many pages long. I also have trouble with making a thesis.

BrandonW1 said...

my higgest obstacle is starting it... once I find a thesis it will be all downhill from there

LibbyB6 said...

Heeey Mrs. Caldwell. I believe that you are doing a great job helping us with our research and topics. The hardest part for me is motivation. There is plenty of information out there, its just my laziness keeping me from seeking them out. The librarians are verrry great, also. I have really enjoyed this research paper so far. Picking our own topics...unbelievable. I never thought this was possible. I was actually flabbergasted when you suggested that. I am now very happy that you let us. Thanks, B!!!

not-Research papers are a huge obstacle especially to second semester seniors. I have a hard time getting started and I always wish I had made better time of days in the library. I have started researching in earnest lately and I need to stop procrastinating.

rebeccal5 said...

My main problem is that I cant get started. I am not very motivated...in other words, I just want to graduate and go to college. Haha, but I guess I have to pass all of my classes to graduate. It will get done-it just might not be the best paper ever created.

AndersonS6 said...

I usually have a problem finding enough sources. My papers end up having lots of quotes from one or two sources and one from the all the rest.

I decided to do my paper foiling Macbeth and Macduff. Im having no trouble finding examples of the foil in the text, however it seems that no one else has written any material about how Macbeth and Macduff foil. That is really making this research paper very difficult. Its another example of why I hate research papers. Can we have a break and do some easy work for a while?

My biggest obstacle so far is actually starting the paper.

As of now, I am having the hardest time with finding information for my topic. Everything I've found on the internet is not all that helpful, and I was only successful in finding one critical analysis in a book. Hopefully, all will work out.

lillyb5 said...

I am having trouble finding any information about my play. The first topic I had I didnt find anything, but once I made it a little broader, I started to find more information.

sallyc1 said...

the hardest part about the research paper is getting started. finding a topic that interests you enough to write a whole paper about is tough. once you find your topic, the next hard part is creating your thesis. once i do this, i can move through the process fairly easily.

KatherineK5 said...

My biggest obstacle is finding enough information. One of my three points has a lot of information, but for the other two I can't find anything. I guess it's sort of coming together now, but I'm still struggling with finding enough stuff to fill up 6 pages.

MaxT6 said...

so why dont we get anymore topics to talk about?

KatieM1 said...

Im doing the play "Much Ado About Nothing" and its not one of Shakespeares more famous plays so Im having some real trouble finding information on it. But I know that as soon as I get my outline together it will get better.

Kevino1 said...

You know me Mrs. Caldwell. You know that i dont like complaining about something unless i feel like i have to...but i have a real big problem! While doing the outline for the paper i realized that this would be SO much easier if i had the notes we took while reading the play that YOU took up and YOU never gave back to us!!!! Just thought you wanted to know and in my opinion...THAT IS BUSH LEAGUE!!!
Respectfully,
Kevin

The hardest part of the whole research paper thing is the actuall research itself. It's tough for me to actually sit down and read through all my sources and pick out all the quotes.

philipr5 said...

My biggest problem so far has been finding good information. A lot of the information that i find on the internet is not very reliable, but after looking a little bit longer i usually find what i need.

willh6 said...

I think that finding the critisizms is going to be the hardest part. It is also going to be hard to write six pages.

carletonw1 said...

My biggest problem is getting started....as you witnesses when our outlines were due I was all over the place. The thing about doing a research paper on Shakespeare is because I found soooo much information and it just took forever to go through it all to find what I really needed. I spent hours reading whole books for info.

JoanneL1 said...

I'm having problems with this research paper. I'm sure that everyone agrees with me... i have NO motivation at all. I just wish that seniors didn't have to do research papers.

johnf5 said...

Like everything in this class, I am just having trouble getting started. It's a mental block that's telling me that it will be way too hard and I should not even start, which is a very bad idea.

philipr5 said...

My biggest obstacle so far has been getting reliable information. I have been able to find a pretty good amount of information about my topic, but a lot of it is not very reliable.
